The project itself :
Samsung Digital ID is a 0→1 identity experience built within Samsung Wallet in partnership with CLEAR. It enables users to securely verify their identity using a passport and store a digital ID that can be used at TSA checkpoints and participating venues as a valid form of identification.
Samsung Wallet’s existing mDL (mobile driver’s license) feature limited digital ID access to users with a valid driver’s license, restricting eligibility primarily to U.S. users. This created a fragmented experience and excluded a large global user base from using digital identity features.
Make digital identity in Samsung Wallet accessible to more users by supporting passport-based verification through CLEAR integration.
Directed the end-to-end product experience, aligning UX strategy, visual identity, and partner collaboration across Samsung Wallet and CLEAR.

All about the user :
User research focused on understanding barriers to digital identity adoption, particularly limitations of mDL-based systems restricted to users with driver’s licenses. Insights highlighted the need for a more inclusive, passport-based solution for global users.
Digital ID is currently restricted to mDL users, limiting access to a small subset of users and excluding global users who could benefit from identity verification in Samsung Wallet.
Digital ID is still a relatively new concept for many users, requiring education around identity provisioning and how to complete steps such as document verification.
Users are required to share highly sensitive documents such as passports, making trust, clarity, and perceived security critical to completing onboarding.
During this stage, defined the core problem by combining user and business constraints, highlighting limitations in the mDL system and reframing the opportunity for a more inclusive, passport-based digital identity experience.
The existing mDL system limited Digital ID access to users with driver’s licenses, excluding a large global user base. This created a fragmented identity experience and restricted Samsung Wallet’s ability to scale digital identity beyond the U.S.
Expand Samsung Wallet’s digital identity system beyond mDL to support passport-based provisioning, enabling broader and more global access to secure identity verification.

The project schematically :
This phase focused on defining the end-to-end Digital ID experience, including onboarding, passport verification, and the split between Samsung Wallet and CLEAR-owned flows.
A high-level map of the end-to-end experience, connecting user actions, system touchpoints, and ownership.
Through partner workshops, I defined the initial service blueprint, aligning Samsung and CLEAR on user flow, ownership, and responsibilities across the provisioning experience.

Early concepts are translated into wireframes to establish layout, interaction patterns, and user flow before moving into high-fidelity design.
Using Samsung's design system, I translated the approved service blueprint into mid-fidelity wireframes, establishing the onboarding experience and refining key interactions before visual design.

The visual identity reinforces trust, consistency, and recognition throughout the product experience.
Drawing inspiration from the visual language of passports, I directed the creative development of the Samsung ID identity—including logo exploration, moodboards, and digital card art. I established a cohesive visual system with distinct base and CLEAR+ premium card designs, ensuring the identity aligned with both Samsung Wallet and CLEAR while reinforcing trust throughout the experience.

Working closely with our Core UX team, I guided the final onboarding experience from UX direction through implementation. The experience was documented as a comprehensive UX guide that defined screen behavior, interaction patterns, and user flow, ensuring a consistent implementation across Samsung Wallet and CLEAR.

Thoughtful motion communicates unfamiliar interactions more effectively than static instructions, helping users complete onboarding with confidence.
Because passport MRZ and NFC chip scanning were new to most users, I led the creative direction working with our motion designer for onboarding tutorials that visually guided each step.
The motion design transformed complex interactions into an intuitive learning experience, improving confidence and reducing friction throughout provisioning.
The project schematically :
The final experience enabled expansion of Digital ID access beyond mDL users, unlocking broader global eligibility through passport-based provisioning.
Successfully launched Samsung Digital ID in partnership with CLEAR, enabling a broader user base to access digital identity. Users can now securely verify their identity through passport provisioning and use it for faster authentication at airport TSA checkpoints and participating venues.
This project reinforced the complexity of designing cross-company systems, especially in high-trust environments like digital identity. I learned how critical clear ownership boundaries, alignment with partners, and iterative feedback are when shaping end-to-end experiences at scale.
